"What I know for sure is that speaking your truth is the most powerful tool we have"- Oprah Winfrey
Sunday nightt at the Golden Globe Award Show, Oprah received the Cecil B. DeMille award creating history, and giving young women hope for a brighter future. During her acceptance speech, Winfrey discussed how inspired she was after watching Sidney Poitier win the Cecil B. DeMille award.
In 1982, Sidney received the Cecil B. DeMille award right here at the Golden Globes and it is not lost on me that at this moment, there are some little girls watching as I become the first black woman to be given this same award. It is an honor -- it is an honor and it is a privilege to share the evening with all of them and also with the incredible men and women who have inspired me, who challenged me, who sustained me and made my journey to this stage possible. Dennis Swanson who took a chance on me for "A.M. Chicago."
She also discussed the mistreatment of women, the way patriarchy affects society, and the phrase "me too" and what it means to women who have been subjected to bullshit all for the sake of keeping a job, or simply trying to make a living for themselves.
Oprah gave an absolutely inspirational speech that brought the audience to their feet. Not only did she speak with conviction, but she was transparent in her beliefs on being honest about your truth which is such a vital part of being happy. Oprah, thank you for being a great role model for young Black women across the globe. We appreciate your efforts and your vision.
